5 in 5: Ruth Annan

It's time for another edition of 5 in 5. Today we're shining the spotlight on one of our favorite photographers: Ruth Annan, the Owner and Lead Photographer at Annan Productions.

Ruth has been a valued partner to ELE for numerous events, consistently impressing us with her collaborative approach, keen attention to detail, and stunning photography. We're eager to delve into Ruth's insights as she shares her perspective from her base in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area.

Here’s Ruth’s 5 in 5!

1. What inspired your career in the event industry, and how has it evolved since then?

I strategically pivoted into event photography after ten successful years working in television production. Having the experience of directing live productions and television shows, I knew that someday I would own my own media company, and in 2017, I did it!

Birthing Annan Productions, balancing photography, business, and family life has been an adventure. Despite the adversities, as a Black woman business owner thriving in the event photography space, year after year, I have been challenged to show up both in person and digitally. I am blessed and thankful for the growth we are experiencing as our team continues to grow, our relationships continue to be nurtured, and our production value continues to elevate. I love what I do and I love the unforgettable experience Annan Productions brings to the world!

2. Can you share a memorable challenge you faced in your role and how you overcame it?

To date, one of my most memorable challenges I faced as an event photographer was capturing a four day conference a few months shy of giving birth! It was such an overwhelming and empowering experience that reminded me of how strong we are if and when we give it our all.

The challenge was, how will I be able to be on my feet 10 plus hours a day for four days at that? I could have easily backed out of the event, but after careful thought, planning and execution, I joined my crew for those four days and we captured amazing images that will live on for years.

I am extremely proud of the decision I made, especially because I did it all while carrying a precious life. I had many reasons not to, but I'm glad I chose to do it anyway.

3. In your opinion, what is the most exciting trend or innovation currently shaping the event planning landscape?

HEADSHOTS! That's the most exciting trend right now and my favorite at this very moment. We're right at that 7-10 year mark where many people are looking to update their headshots and reintroduce themselves into their respective markets and industries. It has been a frequent request of our clients at conferences and retreats, and I love that we were already providing this service, which gave us a great head start all while being on-trend.

4. How do you collaborate with stakeholders to create unforgettable experiences for clients? Exploring collaboration practices showcases the interconnected nature of the industry and provides insights into teamwork and coordination.

At Annan Productions, we recognize the profound impact of representation. We collaborate closely with our clients by celebrating their diversity, and capturing transformative experiences beyond traditional photography. Our goal is to bring your vision to life!

5. What advice would you give to someone aspiring to your role in the event industry?

Actively listen to your clients (audience).

If and when you do this effectively, you will successfully cater to their needs which in turn nurtures trust. A trustworthy relationship is key to a long lasting partnership. I have learned in my years of business that actively listening to our clients and audiences has propelled us beyond our quarterly and yearly goals and increased our quality of work. When we listen to the needs of our clients, we gain perspective and access which enables us to thrive!

Keep up to date with Ruth here!
